A leading health network in Pennsylvania, recognized among the top 15 health systems nationwide and awarded a prestigious five-star rating from Medicare, is renowned for its commitment to delivering exceptional care.
With over 300 care sites, more than 20,000 employees, and an annual revenue exceeding $4 billion, the health network recognized that robust reporting is essential for maintaining high-quality care and effective cost management. To enhance reporting capabilities, the network sought to migrate its legacy reporting system to Microsoft Power BI, partnering with Green Leaf to support the implementation.
A leading health network sought to migrate over 600 reports from its on-premise system to Microsoft Power BI within a strict one-year timeline.
Green Leaf helped design the reporting platform architecture and migrate the reports to the new platform.
The migration to Power BI was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, empowering stakeholders to make decisions that improve patient care.
Despite already leveraging a sophisticated data platform that surpassed industry standards, the health network was challenged to contain rising vendor costs and transition its reporting platform to the cloud all while establishing more advanced reporting capabilities. A strategic decision was made to transition its reporting capabilities to Microsoft technologies. Completing the migration within a year was crucial to avoid additional costs associated with vendor contract renewals.
With a portfolio of over 600 reports and dashboards in an on-premise environment, the health network aimed to migrate its reporting to Microsoft Power BI in Azure. Despite having a capable development team, Power BI was new to them and required specialized Microsoft expertise to assess options to architect the new reporting platform to support complex reporting requirements and to assist with report migration. That’s where Green Leaf came in.
The project was a collaborative effort involving the health network’s internal team, external consultants, and our team. Green Leaf’s role focused on advising the design of the architecture to migrate existing reports to Microsoft Power BI. Chosen for its advanced capabilities and seamless integration with cloud environments, Power BI provided a natural pathway to enhance reporting.
Our Power BI developers also assisted with the technical execution of the report migration process. We replicated essential features in the new tool, including secure access and storage of paginated reports through SharePoint, exporting reports, and scheduling reports. Power BI did not inherently support scheduling requirements, so we utilized Power Automate to enable scheduled report runs without individual subscriptions.
In addition to technical implementation, we provided mentorship to the internal team on effective Power BI utilization. Together as a project team, we navigated uncertainties and evaluated options, ensuring informed decisions were made.
The migration to Power BI was a pivotal project for the health network, posing significant risks and financial implications if not delivered on time. Our team successfully completed the work in just under 12 months – well ahead of schedule and under budget.
The migration to Power BI resulted in substantial benefits, including significant cost savings. By eliminating licensing fees associated with the legacy system, the health network realized millions in savings over three years.
The new solution’s agility and user-friendly interface empowered report developers to generate insights much faster than before. This enhancement in efficiency underscores the health network’s commitment to improving patient outcomes by empowering clinicians with robust analytics for informed decision-making.
Overall, the project was a major success, resulting in:
