To modernize and streamline their credit risk management system, a leading reinsurance solutions provider engaged our team to migrate a legacy Microsoft Access-based database to an Azure SQL Database. The outdated system had become cumbersome for their actuarial team, who needed external support to help them manage it. By transitioning to SQL Server and integrating reporting capabilities via Power BI, the client‘s actuarial team gained the independence to enhance and maintain their system going forward.
Migrating data from Microsoft Access to Azure SQL Database, building data pipelines with Azure Data Factory for continuous credit risk data flow, and creating Power BI dashboards for analyzing counterparties and credit risk.
The client’s primary challenge was dealing with an outdated Microsoft Access-based Credit Risk database that had become a bottleneck for internal teams. The original developer was no longer with the company, and the system couldn’t be maintained by the actuarial team. This led to growing technical debt and delays in system enhancements. The client needed a solution that would be familiar to the actuarial team and allow them to support the application internally, without relying on external resources.
To address the client’s challenges, the project was executed in the following phases:
Throughout the project, technologies such as Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Factory, and Power BI were leveraged to transition the data and logic from Microsoft Access to a modern data platform, ensuring smooth integration with reporting tools.
Upon completion of the migration, the client’s actuarial team was empowered to manage and enhance the system independently, a key objective of the project. By moving the database to SQL Server hosted in Azure, they gained the ability to add business logic and make system updates without the need for external support. This modernization not only alleviated their reliance on outdated technology but also significantly reduced technical debt, providing a foundation for future improvements.
In addition, a new name-matching process for counterparties was implemented, streamlining data management and improving workflow efficiency within the actuarial department. Modernizing a 30-year-old system delivered significant value and a lasting framework for the client’s future data management needs, without requiring investment in an entirely new system.
