Overcoming reporting complexity and redundancies in the insurance industry

Services

Data Analytics

For insurance organizations, streamlining reports is critical for managing complex data from multiple sources, improving decision-making, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations.

With scattered data sources and an overwhelming number of reports, an insurance organization approached Green Leaf to deliver a tailored solution that could transform the way they managed and utilized their data.

Challenge

Overcoming the reporting complexities and redundancies of an aging system with scattered data sources making decision-making inefficient.

Solution

Comprehensive data centralization and report migration from from Cognos to Power BI removed 90% of redundant reports, and developed a robust data model.

Impact

Simplified reporting, increased efficiency, and long-term operational savings while expanding Power BI usage for continuous growth.

The Challenge

The client was facing significant challenges with their reporting infrastructure. Their aging Cognos system housed over 1,000 reports, many of which were redundant or overlapping, making report management and decision-making inefficient. Additionally, data was scattered across various sources including multiple SQL Server databases, spreadsheets, emails, and AS400 files. The client needed a solution to consolidate their data, streamline their reports, and transition to a modern, user-friendly reporting platform.

The Solution

Green Leaf Consulting Group led a successful project to modernize the client’s reporting infrastructure by migrating from Cognos to Power BI. The project was executed through several key phases:

  1. Data Centralization: All scattered data sources were assessed and centralized into a single repository.
  2. Data Modeling: A robust data model was developed to simplify data sourcing and reporting processes.
  3. Report Consolidation: The team identified and removed redundant reports, reducing the total number of reports by up to 90%.
  4. Cognos to Power BI Migration: Reports were converted into Power BI, enabling a more efficient and scalable reporting system.
  5. Ongoing Expansion: Power BI usage continues to expand as new metrics are added over time.

The focus on placing logic within the data model, rather than the reporting layer, ensured consistency and minimized potential errors across reports.

The Impact

As a result of this project, our client experienced a significant reduction in the number of reports, simplifying their reporting processes and allowing Power BI to become a more intuitive, user-friendly tool. This migration also resulted in significant operational savings by eliminating the maintenance costs of the outdated Cognos infrastructure. The streamlined reporting system has not only improved efficiency but continues to deliver long-term value as Power BI is further expanded to meet the client’s growing needs. The project was met with high client satisfaction, underscoring the importance of Green Leaf’s strategic approach to modernization.

For insurance organizations, streamlining reports not only reduces costs but also enhances decision-making, risk analysis, and regulatory compliance – key factors for staying competitive in a data-driven industry. By drastically reducing the number of reports and transitioning to Power BI, Green Leaf not only simplified the client’s reporting process but also set the stage for continued growth and operational efficiency.
